Why Adventure Demands Excellence - and So Does Leadership

In the wild and in business, only the prepared thrive.

Jenn Cordz

In the great outdoors, there’s no room for half-measures. You either rise to the challenge or face the consequences. Nature doesn’t care about intentions or resumes; it rewards preparation, skill, and execution. The same principle applies to leadership - especially in industries where innovation and impact are non-negotiable.

Being a leader in the outdoor industry and a professional athlete, I’ve seen firsthand how holding ourselves and others to high standards can create a culture where excellence becomes the norm, not the exception. This is the essence of meritocracy: building environments where talent, effort, and results - not politics or entitlement - determine success.

Why Meritocracy Matters

In the outdoors or on a sports team, meritocracy is non-negotiable. The river doesn’t care how many seasons you’ve fished - it rewards your ability to read the water, adjust to changing conditions, and execute with precision. In the same way, organizations that embrace meritocracy foster innovation, efficiency, and growth by elevating individuals who consistently deliver results.

But here’s the challenge: building a meritocracy isn’t easy. It demands strong leadership, clear expectations, and a commitment to personal and professional growth. It also requires us, as leaders, to lead by example - by striving to raise the bar every day and inspiring others to do the same.

Adventure as a Blueprint for Leadership

The parallels between adventure and leadership are striking. Both require:

  • Preparation: Success starts with readiness. Whether it’s mapping a new route through the backcountry or preparing a team for a product launch, the best outcomes come from meticulous preparation.

  • Adaptability: Conditions can change in an instant in the wilderness. Leaders must also adapt, pivoting strategies and recalibrating teams to stay on course.

  • Resilience: Failure is a given - both in the wild and in business. The key is how quickly you recover and what lessons you take with you.

When we cultivate these traits within ourselves and our teams, we create a culture that values performance over politics, skill over status and results over excuses.

Leading By Example

Meritocracy starts with us. As leaders, we must be willing to hold ourselves to the highest standards and demonstrate the behaviors we expect from our teams. That means:

  • Being Relentless: Never settling for "good enough" when "exceptional" is possible. This mindset fuels our performance and inspires those around us to aim higher.

  • Seeking Feedback: Embrace constructive criticism as a tool for growth. Feedback is a mirror that reveals where we need to grow, and we improve by leaning into that reflection.

  • Embodying Standards Over Feelings: I draw inspiration from performance coach Ben Newman, whose mantra “Standard Over Feelings” is a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. This mindset emphasizes staying true to core principles and executing commitments, even when difficult. Feelings and motivation may fluctuate, but living to the Standard remains steady - a true north for decision-making and action. Leading by example means upholding these standards consistently, especially when emotions might tempt us to compromise.

When we lead with this level of intentionality, we create a culture where meritocracy thrives - where individuals know that effort, excellence, and adherence to values will always be recognized and rewarded.

A Call to Action

The outdoors teaches us that success is earned, not given. As leaders, we have the opportunity - and the responsibility - to create cultures where excellence is celebrated, mediocrity is challenged, and everyone has a chance to rise based on their contributions.

So here’s my question to you: How can we, as leaders, foster a culture of high standards in our industries? What steps can we take to ensure we’re leading by example and inspiring others to level up the way they show up?

Please share your thoughts in the comments. Let’s start a conversation about how we can drive innovation, accountability, and growth in everything we do.
