Inheriting Fire: Daughter of the Burning Sky
What the Valkyries, and My Grandmother, Taught Me About Courage and Becoming Unbreakable
There are moments in life when the world goes quiet, when the air sharpens, the ground steadies, and something ancient inside you wakes up. It’s the same feeling you get standing under a northern sky as the aurora begins to ripple across the darkness.
The light shifts.
The atmosphere hums.
You don’t just see it… You feel it.
That’s how the Valkyries entered the legends of my childhood: not as characters, but as a force, a reminder that even in the deepest night, power has a way of revealing itself.
And that force came to me through my grandmother.
My grandmother didn’t just tell stories, she carried them from the old country.
She carried the North the way some people carry faith: quietly, firmly, unshakably. And every time she sat beside me and spoke of the old legends, I felt her strength before I ever understood it.
She was the first warrior woman I ever met.
Not the kind who swung a sword, but the kind who held a family together with raw grit and unwavering love. The kind who didn’t bend to storms. She walked straight into them with calm, deliberate steps. The kind whose presence alone could make chaos retreat.
And it was her voice that gave me my first Valkyrie.
The Aurora Was Never Just Light
“When the sky dances green, the Valkyries are riding.”
“Watch closely. They’re choosing who walks with honour.”

Fear not death for the hour of your doom is set, and none may escape it. - Old Norse Saying
She told me the Northern Lights were the reflection of their armour. The fierce, shimmering glow from women who rode across the heavens to guide the worthy home.
But the lesson she really meant to give me wasn’t about death.
It was about how to live.
Valkyries didn’t wait for easy conditions.
They didn’t look for comfort.
They didn’t stand on the edges of fear.
They arrived exactly where things were hardest.
They chose with clarity.
They led with presence.
They lit up the darkest sky simply by stepping into it.
That’s the part she wanted me to remember.
Strength Isn’t a Roar. It’s a Quiet Flame You Protect With Your Life
My grandmother lived that truth long before she ever spoke it.
She worked, she raised children, she endured loss, she rebuilt herself over and over, and she did it with the same rare, luminous stillness I now recognize as the mark of a real warrior.
Not loud.
Not boastful.
Not performative.
But unmistakable.
A woman’s power is not in how she avoids darkness.
It’s in how she walks through it, carrying light.
That’s Valkyrie energy.
That’s the lineage I inherited.
The Hard Roads Always Call Us Home
People see the mountains I climb, the rivers I fish, the races I train for, the companies I lead, the heartbreaks I survive, and they think the strength came from those things.
It didn’t.
It came from her.
It came from the North.
It came from a childhood built on stories of women who rode into storms with fire in their chests.
Every time I’ve stepped into something that terrified me…
Every time I held the line alone…
Every time I led people through chaos…
Every time I rebuilt when life cracked me open…
I felt her hand on my back, steadying me,
Reminding me where I come from.
Reminding me of the sky that burns.

⚔️ Lessons from the Valkyries ⚔️
1. Walk Into the Hard Things, Not Around Them
Valkyries ride straight into the battlefield.
Leaders ride straight into tough conversations, hard decisions, and uncomfortable growth.
Avoidance kills momentum. Arrival creates clarity.
2. Lead With Presence, Not Volume
Their power wasn’t loud; it was unmistakable.
Real leadership is felt before it’s heard.
3. Let Your Light Shift the Environment
The aurora changes the sky simply by existing.
Your discipline, your confidence, your courage. They alter every room you walk into.
4. Strength Is a Choice, Repeated Daily
Valkyries choose who is worthy.
You choose your standard, your integrity, your habits, your path… again and again.
Live your standard even when it’s inconvenient or hard.
5. Legacy Is a Lantern
My grandmother handed me strength through stories.
Everything you overcome becomes light for someone behind you.
When You Show Up as Yourself, the World Shifts
That’s what the Valkyries represent to me now.
Not myth.
Not fantasy.
Not some distant legend from cold northern nights.
But a standard.
A model.
A reminder.
A way of being.
They changed the sky by entering it fully.
My grandmother changed our family by living with quiet power.
And I change my world every time I step into the hard things instead of shrinking.
Leadership isn’t the absence of fear.
It’s the presence of self.
It’s choosing:
to arrive when others hesitate.
clarity over noise.
truth over comfort.
discipline over excuses.
to light the damn sky when life goes dark.
That’s the inheritance I carry.
That’s the north in my blood.
That’s the lesson my grandmother left me… the one I’m still learning, still living, still becoming:
When the darkness rises, ride into it.
Your fire is stronger than you think.
And someone behind you is watching to learn how it’s done.
I write this not as a mythologist, but as a beloved granddaughter. A woman shaped by Scandinavian roots, hard-won lessons, and the unwavering strength of the woman who raised me. These stories aren’t just folklore to me; they’re the compass I return to when life demands more courage than comfort.
If this piece brings you clarity or even a flicker of that northern fire, know this: it lives in you, too.
